If you are a small business starting out and need an accountant, based on our experience, my suggestion would be to look elsewhere unless your pockets are VERY deep. Whilst we cannot fault the work or advice that Synergy provided to us when we engaged them for our start-up small business, the invoices we were charged we believe were excessive. We were charged more than double our budgeted amount for auditing and accounting (a budget reviewed by Synergy before we set-up).Our complaint resulted in the reduction of one invoice, and when we made the decision to change accountants and auditors, Synergy suddenly had one more invoice to send through for our tax returns for the last financial year (a period of 4 months of trading). The resulting invoice we believe was excessive to say the least. Synergy refused to provide a breakdown of hours despite indicating that it takes three accountants to finalise a tax return – a Senior Accountant, Manager and Director, each with hourly rates in the range of $240 - $385 per hour!To give you an indication of how excessive we believe their fees are, our new accountant has just completed our tax returns for the entire financial year (12 months) and it is still 66% less than the invoice we received from Synergy. Our new auditor is 75% less than Synergy for the mandatory auditing we need to undertake for a trust account.We were referred to the team at Synergy by an existing client (medium sized business) that was very happy. The team at Synergy were always lovely to deal with and are definitely great at what they do. If you are a medium to large business I am sure they would be amazing, but for us, the whole experience has been a very expensive lesson learned and our advice is to chose an accountant to match your business size.
