Feedback:

I definitely would not recommend anyone use this service and I feel for anyone who /has/ to go here to do paperwork.I just got offered employment and had to go to this location to complete paperwork. I just moved back home, so a lot of my important documents are packed up. However, I talked to my manager and he advised me that my birth certificate, license, and DD information would suffice. So yesterday, 9/3/19, I head to this location. I had a shift later that day that I planned to be early for so I would have the chance to study. When I arrived to this location, no one greeted. There was complete silence except for a radio that played country music. The front desk person (Luisa) did not make eye contact with me and I had to just call out a question to the entire room "Is this the place for on-boarding?" One woman felt pity for my confusion and told me that I just needed to give my paperwork to Luisa. The is where the problem began. She took my BC and my license, photo-copied it, then called me to her desk to ask if I had another form of ID. I told her "No". Luisa told me that she would not accept my birth certificate because "It is not an American birth certificate." (Backstory: I am the daughter of two US veterans. I was born on a PR Navy Base. The hospital where I was born no longer exists. I am VERY MUCH a US citizen, my parents are United States citizens, and my ancestors' literally built this country. Also, Avalon is located in PENSACOLA...a Navy base town. I have met so many people who were born oversees and I have never heard of anything like this happening. Newsflash: PR is a United States territory. PRs pay U.S. taxes AND VOTE. PR IS NOT A FOREIGN COUNTRY.)Luisa was insistent that my birth certificate did not denote my US CITIZENSHIP and that SHE WOULD NOT ACCEPT IT. Never in my entire life has this happened. (Luisa asked if I had a PERMANENT RESIDENT card.) Is it ironic that this person with a Hispanic name was questioning my right to work in the US? I left the office quickly after Luisa denied my BC multiple times (but for some reason she wanted to keep the photocopy of my license and BC, for what?) My hands were shaking and my stomach was in knots and I was so anxious because, like, WTF?? Luisa (and the rest of her co-workers) barely spared me a glance as I exited. She did not say, "Thank you" or "Goodbye", she did not even glance up from her computer. Ok, enter my mom.I went to my vehicle and raced home to get my U.S. Passport so I would still make it to my job on time. On the way, I called my mother and told her what happened and She. Was. Outraged. She is a disabled veteran and was incensed to hear what Avalon HR said to me in regards to my birth certificate. She called and spoke to the HR person - Julie - and told me to head back, but I was already home. I got my mother's BC while I was home to FURTHER LEGITAMIZE (lmao???) my claim to U.S. citizenship. Then I got in my car and AGAIN drove 30 mins /back/ to Avalon. When I got back there the vibe was totally different. Everyone was all sugary-sweet smiles and saying, "Hello". Luisa even greeted me by handing me the license that I dropped (when my hands were shaking from anxiety and confusion, thanks Luisa). Julie pulled me into her office to tell me that Puerto Rican BCs are a way that some people commit fraud (...IDC). And that only BCs made after 2010 were acceptable (YIKES, I'm a 90s baby). And that neither she nor her staff meant to be /ignorant/, they just wanted to be /proper/. I was polite and strained smiles at Luisa and Julie, but in the pit of my stomach I feel sure that this incident was based in race. If I were white, named Rebecca, and was born in PR, I'm sure that they would have acquiesced. But since I am Black and we live under the 'leadership' of 45, these people were emboldened to deny my paperwork. PoC, beware, this office is comprised only of white woman (53% voted for Him) who may or may not process your on-boarding paperwork in a speedy manner.
